The Operations Director role is the final proving ground before COO or Managing Director appointments. 5 CV mistakes Operations Directors make

1. Single-site language at a multi-site level

If you manage 4 sites but your CV reads like 4 separate Plant Manager roles, you are underselling yourself. Lead with the portfolio view: “4 sites, €320M revenue, 1,200 FTEs” then detail individual site achievements underneath.

2. Operational metrics without strategic context

“Improved OEE from 68% to 84%” is impressive but incomplete at Director level. Connect it: “Improved OEE from 68% to 84%, contributing €12M in additional throughput capacity that enabled 2 new customer contracts.”

3. No transformation narrative

Directors are hired to change things, not maintain them. Your CV must include at least one significant transformation: restructuring, digital implementation, culture change, or turnaround. Without it, you look like a steady-state operator.

4. Missing CAPEX experience

At Director level, capital investment decisions are part of your scope. Include CAPEX programme management: what you invested in, the business case, and the outcome.

5. No board or PE interaction

If you have presented to boards, PE investors, or steering committees, include it. It signals you operate at the governance level, not just the operational level.
